# Direct Farmgate Economics: Rewriting Value Addition in Southwestern Uganda

For over a century, the primary tragedy of African agriculture has been the exportation
of raw, unrefined commodities while overseas corporations capture the bulk of value
addition. At Ntamba Processors, we are disrupting this exploitative paradigm through

## The Predatory Middleman Trap

 In conventional rural Ugandan coffee trade, smallholders are frequently subjected
to predatory informal brokers—known locally as “middlemen.” These brokers exploit
farmers’ urgent needs for cash during school fee deadlines or medical emergencies
by buying immature, unpicked green coffee on credit at fractions of fair market 
value.

 Because farmers are paid flat rates regardless of cherry quality, they are disincentivized
from selective picking. Stripping entire branches yields a mixture of green, overripe,
and defective cherries that degrade Uganda’s reputation on international markets
while keeping farming households trapped in generational poverty.

## The Ntamba Direct Farmgate Model

 Ntamba Processors established a direct-to-farmgate buying model that eliminates
intermediary brokers entirely. Across our network of over 2,500 registered outgrowers
in Mbarara, Isingiro, and surrounding Southwestern Ugandan districts, we operate

   directly via MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money at the point of delivery, eliminating
   deferred payment risks and predatory IOUs.
 * **Agronomic Extension Support:** Registered outgrowers receive complimentary 
   technical training in organic composting, agroforestry pruning, and shade management
   from our staff agronomists.

## Retaining Value Addition at Origin

 Direct farmgate pricing is only the first pillar of our economic model. The second—
and most transformative—is industrial value addition at origin.

 When raw green coffee beans leave African shores for roasting in Europe or North
America, up to 85% of the consumer retail price remains in the importing nation.
Ntamba Processors deliberately built complete downstream value addition capacity
locally:

 * **Commercial Drum Roasting:** We roast, blend, and nitrogen-flush pack single-
   origin whole bean and ground coffees in Uganda, creating skilled technical jobs
   for youth and certified Q-graders.
 * **Apiary & Fruit Value Addition:** By cold-settling farm honey and solar-dehydrating
   surplus tropical fruits into FruitTreat pouches, we prevent seasonal fruit gluts
   where up to 40% of local mango and pineapple crops once rotted in transit.
